Ready for Reality
Hofer, Gertrud (2006). Ready for Reality: Legal Interpreting.
Abstract
Since the 1960s interpreting services are provided in legal settings. The need for interpreters has risen continually after the middle of the 20th century due to migration. Along with the change of the countries the migrants came from there has been a continuing change of languages resulting in a wide range of languages required. For most of these languages there were no trained professionals. Trained professionals hardly ever work in legal settings out of various reasons: poor slalaries, difficult working conditions (e.g. documentation is not always provided). Therefore there is a need for legal interpreters to be trained. To provide training programs means that the institutes for translation and interpreting can help solving the communication problems of modern societies.
