Research and development activities

Concepts, projects, solutions

The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (IUED) carries out research and development activities in four broad areas:

  • Applied Discourse Studies
  • Interpreting Studies
  • Language Technology and Multilingual Communication
  • Technical Communication
  • Translation Studies

Research and development projects are supported both by an international team of academics and by the work carried out by the specialist units and centres at the Institute and in other parts of the ZHAW’s School of Applied Linguistics (such as the Centre for Computational Linguistics, the Centre for Terminology and Lexicography, and the Centre for Technical Communication). Projects also draw on the interdisciplinary resources of the ZHAW and on its wide network of partnerships with other universities in Switzerland and elsewhere.

As a matter of policy, the IUED emphasises applied research, with a focus on work which can be - and is - implemented in practice. Accordingly, projects are undertaken both in cooperation with other European universities and with well-known corporations (such Siemens in Karlsruhe and Star AG in Ramsen).
