Terminology in the curriculum
Terminology is a compulsory subject in the BA degree programme in Translation.
The series of lectures on terminology expounds the fundamental concepts of terminology and explains the basic methodological principles applied in terminology work. An overview of commonly-used terminology tools is provided and the importance of consistent terminology is demonstrated. Students thus gain an understanding of what terminology work aims to achieve and how it is put into effect, as well as appreciating its role within the communication process as a whole.
Students generally attend this course of lectures in their third semester.
Later on in their studies, students may elect to specialise in terminology.
Those choosing this path are then given opportunities in the latter part of their curriculum to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical issues by:
- putting various research techniques into practice,
- developing solution strategies for terminology issues,
- learning to use these in terminology databases, and
- gaining an awareness of the terminological problems which can arise in everyday working life.
